Evaluation, Pros & Cons
Editorial score based on public benchmarks and community feedback — not a third-party benchmark result
Key Advantages
- Most widely deployed coding assistant; deep GitHub repo, PR, and Issue synergy
- Broad IDE support (VS Code, JetBrains, Visual Studio, Xcode) with enterprise indemnification
Limitations & Caveats
- Autonomous workspace refactoring is historically slower than modern dedicated AI IDEs
Overview
Copilot previewed in 2021 and GA’d in 2022, growing from autocomplete to Chat, Edits, Workspace, and Cloud Agent. Multi-model picking opened up in 2025. In August 2026 Grok 4.6 landed across VS Code, Visual Studio, CLI, Cloud Agent, JetBrains, Xcode, and Eclipse. Enterprises can keep new models off by default. It is a model router on GitHub workflow, not one model.
Direction
Microsoft is embedding Copilot in GitHub, Azure, Office, and Windows. CLI / Cloud Agent trend toward async engineers; IDE completion stays the base. The picker will track OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, xAI, and in-house MAI.
Version history
Aug 2026
LatestGrok 4.6 across surfaces
Eight surfaces on Aug 14.
View details
New capabilities
- Grok 4.6 on about eight developer surfaces at once
What got stronger
- JetBrains, Xcode, and CLI got the same xAI generation
Version notes
The 14 August 2026 drop shows Copilot’s moat is surface area. Models come from others; the switch lives at GitHub.
May 2025
Multi-model picker
Claude / Gemini join the picker.
View details
New capabilities
- Claude, Gemini, and others in the picker
What got stronger
- No need to switch editors just to use a model
Version notes
The picker turned Copilot from “GitHub × OpenAI” into a model router on GitHub. Enterprises can disable defaults and whitelist.
Oct 2024
Copilot Edits / Workspace
Multi-file edits and task agents.
View details
New capabilities
- Edits / Workspace multi-file edits
- Early task agents
What got stronger
- Could take “change this feature,” not only a one-line complete
Version notes
This was Copilot’s answer to Cursor Composer: multi-file, planned edits. Enterprises still preferred it because they already lived on GitHub.
Dec 2023
Copilot Chat
In-IDE chat and workspace Q&A.
View details
New capabilities
- In-IDE chat
- Ask the workspace why this is failing
What got stronger
- Beyond complete: explain, refactor, write tests
Version notes
Copilot Chat turned ghost text into a colleague you could talk to. Workspace awareness was still rough; the interaction shape was complete.
Jun 2022
Copilot GA
Paid coding assistant.
View details
New capabilities
- Paid GA subscription
- Enterprise buying started
What got stronger
- Became a reimbursable dev tool, not an experiment
Version notes
GA put Copilot into compliance and procurement. That is still why its coverage is the widest.
Jun 2021
Copilot technical preview
VS Code autocomplete.
View details
New capabilities
- VS Code inline autocomplete
- Next-line suggestions from public code
What got stronger
- Boilerplate typing got much faster
Version notes
The preview made “AI writes the next line” a habit. No chat, no multi-file edits—but the IDE already felt different.
